The Lost Cavalry's Diary

15/1/09 : RIP The London Astoria

I always hate it when places that I love close down, but the Astoria being demolished is particularly sad. It was the venue I went to my first proper gig at - I went to see Manic Street Preachers there on their Holy Bible tour, the gig that turned out to be Richie Edwards' last before he vanished. Since then it was always one of my lifetime ambitions to play there one day, and in 2007 I achieved it, even if it was just playing one song with Candie Payne rather than playing with one of my own bands. As I walked on stage there that night and picked up my guitar I remember trying to take it all in and enjoy it and remember it - but as with anything like that of course, it all seems like a blur afterwards - I wish I'd videoed it or something. I'm just glad I got to play there.

27/12/08 : Happy Christmas!

For the first time ever I went to midnight mass this year - not because I'm religious (I'm not) but because my friend was playing the church organ. It's an amazing beast of an organ, the size of an upturned car - it even has rear-view mirrors - seriously! Great pastel-blue pipes shoot up from the keyboards 15 feet or so into the air. The best part is that my friend has said I can have a play on it some time... can't wait... but first I need to write a nice piece to play on it... hmmm.

21/12/08 : Fanfarlo: Goodnight...

I never really knew what bands meant when they said 'musical differences' but I do now - it's differences of taste that you only notice when you work really closely together. Not even causing arguments really, just an underlying feeling, like if you're going out with someone and it's good but somehow not -great-... and you realise it's the right thing to move on.

The last two years with Fanfarlo have been amazing and I'm incredibly, incredibly proud of the album we've made together. I think it's going to do really well. I'm moving on though, and I'm going to keep on writing music - my head is bursting with ideas at the moment! Stay in touch with me here! 2009 is going to be a busy year for me...
